ROMULUS, Mich. The crew of Northwest Airlines Flight 255apparently forgot to set the jetliner's wing flaps when preparing totake off from Detroit Metropolitan Airport Sunday, creating a planethat could not fly, sources investigating the nation's second-worstair disaster said Wednesday.
Federal safety officials examining preliminary readings from thejet's flight data recorder said they were shocked at the apparentomission. Turning wing flaps down to aid in takeoff is one of themost basic procedures in commercial aviation.
"At first we didn't believe it because it's just toohorrifying," said one official investigating the crash, which killedat least 156 people. …
