Fed: Telstra slammed over reported plans to move jobs offshore

The communications union has criticised Telstra over reports that it plans to send
hundreds more jobs to India.

Today's Australian Financial Review cites an internal Telstra memo suggesting the telco
plans to increase offshore outsourcing of back-office operations.

It follows recent criticism of Telstra by Federal Treasurer PETER COSTELLO over its
plan to outsource 450 technology jobs to India.

Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union Victorian secretary LEN COOPER says the
telco is putting profits ahead of its workers, and he wants the federal government to
intervene.

He says Telstra is totally focused on the needs of its big institutional shareholders,
including the federal government, and wants to drive up the bottom line as quickly as
possible to prepare the ground for privatisation.
