NSW: Brogden wants drivers to submit to alcohol, drug tests

New South Wales Opposition Leader JOHN BROGDEN says train drivers should be testedregularly for drugs and alcohol as part of any pay deal.

Drivers and train guards are close to voting on a new workplace offer from the StateRail Authority, which reportedly includes an extra $5000 each if they agree to work oneextra day a month.

The current 19-day month was an incentive offered to avoid industrial action duringthe 2000 Olympic Games.

But StateRail now wants drivers and guards to work a 20th day each month.

Mr BROGDEN says any pay deal for drivers must ensure better standards.

He says that includes better on-time running and a willingness for drivers to submitto random alcohol and drug testing.
