Fed: States to fight food labelling changes

Several state and territory governments plan to fight proposed changes to food labellingrules this week.

A meeting of the Australia-New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council in Sydneyon Friday will consider a move to eliminate country of origin labelling on food.

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says his government wants to retain such labellingand so do the governments of New South Wales, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

He says labelling that identifies where food comes from helps consumers make informedchoices, prevents misleading or deceptive conduct and promotes trade.

Mr BEATTIE also says the rules also make it easier to recall potentially contaminatedfood and prevent bio-terrorism.

But the New Zealand government and a national competition policy review have arguedthat mandatory country-of-origin labelling is confusing for consumers and costly for business.
